Movie Review : Raajneeti (2010)

3.5 Stars (out of 4)
Early in Raajneeti (“Politics”), a veteran politician worries that the hot-headed young members of his party will screw up everything that he and his allies have worked for their whole lives. And that’s exactly what happens in this political soap opera.

Prithvi (Arjun Rampal) and Veerendra (Manoj Bajpai) are rising stars in a political party headed by Veerendra’s father, Bhanu. Bhanu’s brother, Chandra (Chetan Pandit) — who’s also Prithvi’s father — is his right-hand man. Chandra’s youngest son, Samar (Ranbir Kapoor), returns from studying in New York for his uncle’s birthday party.

When Bhanu suffers a stroke on his birthday, it sets off a power struggle between Prithvi and Veerendra, who sees himself as rightful heir to lead the party, despite his villainous mustache and penchant for satin suits. Handsome Prithvi is more popular, but he’s not such a great guy either. Bhanu recovers enough to name Chandra acting president in the hopes of maintaining party unity. It doesn’t work.

Veerendru tries to consolidate his power by taking under his wing a popular local athlete interested in running for office. The jock, Sooraj (Ajay Devgan), is the adopted son of Chandra’s chauffeur — and also the secret love-child of Chandra’s wife, Bharti (Nikhila Trikha), making him Pritvi & Samar’s older half-brother.

When Veerendru and Sooraj resort to violence to achieve their ambitions, Samar steps in to help his brother (the one he knows about, not the secret half-brother). Aiding him is Bharti’s brother, Brij (Nana Patekar), who’s long been the family’s clean-up man. The violence spirals out of control, ruining the lives of everyone involved.
With so many characters, it’s hard to keep track of everyone in Raajneeti. Oops, I left out two of the women critical to the story. There’s Sarah (Sarah Thompson, who played Eve in the final season of Angel), Samar’s American girlfriend. And there’s Indu (Katrina Kaif), who loves Samar but is forced into a political married to Prithvi by her wealthy father.

The story sounds convoluted, and it is. But the filmmakers take nearly three hours to tell the story, allowing enough time to give each character depth. There are no heroes in Raajneeti, and no one’s really innocent apart from Sarah, and that’s only because she’s an outsider.

I found Sarah’s perspective invaluable in the film. Every Hindi movie I’ve seen on the topic portrays Indian politics as violent and corrupt. It makes me wonder why anyone would want to enter the field, given the high mortality rate of Bollywood politicians. It was nice to have an onscreen avatar acting as shocked by the carnage as I was.

Indu also plays an important role, giving women a voice in a male-dominated arena. While she could’ve acted a few scenes more forcefully, Kaif is competent in her portrayal of a manipulated woman. It’s an ambitious choice for Kaif, and the right one if she’s looking to branch out from comedies.

While no one character dominates the screentime, Raajneeti wouldn’t work without Patekar as Brij. His character is involved in almost every critical decision, even if peripherally. Brij is a clean-up man who never gets his own hands dirty, allowing him to remain in good standing with the constituents. Patekar plays him as cool and controlled, manipulating people with a smile.

Brij is the eye of a storm that spirals out of control in the last 30 minutes of the movie. Subtle intrigues are abandoned for an orgy of violence that strains credulity. An important rule that the old politicians adhered to is to always get someone else to pull the trigger for you. The young upstarts forget that, and an unnecessary bloodbath ensues. It might make for a good movie, but it seems like bad politics.

movie review : I Hate Love Story

The movie is a very predictable love story full of clichés, the very Bollywood-style romances that it aspires to spoof. The film reminded me of an assignment in film school where we had to make a remix sequence. ‘I Hate Luv Storys’ is a bit like that — a montage of scenes and songs from the various Dharma Productions/Yash Raj Films/Sanjay Bhansali love stories.

Like any of these other productions, the packaging is great but what’s different about this story? It’s pointless trying to even go through the nuances of the plot because there isn’t any. A love triangle with several expected twists that finally proves the inevitability of how everyone eventually falls in love no matter how much they hate love stories.

The basic premise: Our heroine loves love stories and has a perfect one of her own till she suddenly decides to fall for our hero who believes in everything but love. Our Casanova hero falls head over heels in love as typically as one can despite having been repulsed by the whole notion of being in love. But the timing is all wrong.

Sonam Kapoor has the same expression throughout the film; she delivers her dialogues in the same nasal monotone whether she is falling out of love with her childhood sweetheart or falling in love with her initially-annoying colleague. At no point in the movie did I find Sonam’s conviction about love credible because her character seems to be more in love with the notion of being in love.

No matter how filmy and implausible it seemed in real life, Madhuri in ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ or Kajol in ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’ were persuasive about their romantic beliefs. Sonam’s character lacks any rationale for either falling in love or staying in love.

Imran Khan and his fat friend are the only saving grace. Imran lacks the easy charm that we saw in his debut film. He puts in too much effort in his performance as if desperate for a hit. His body looks great and he should be awarded for the most graceful slow motion run at airports.

While the film does make you laugh in bits with a few original one-liners, the characters lack conviction. The movie looks more like a spoof than a real love story where at some point you identify with the characters on screen. It doesn’t really tug at the heartstrings or strike the right chords.

movie review : Lamhaa by yahoo fit to post

Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Lamhaa’ is an ambitious attempt, trying to bring to fore the multifaceted conundrum that the Kashmir crisis is. For the most part it is quite a realistic depiction of the various issues that plague Kashmir. The film, probably deliberately, is more like a documentary than a cohesive narrative that unfolds to tell a compelling story.

Kashmiriyat, the catalytic role that ISI plays in the valley, the vested interests of the Indian and Pakistani governments in keeping the issue alive, the plight of Kashmiri pandits, the atrocities by the security personnel, the trials suffered by the widows and orphans caught in the midst of all this and foremost, the systematic brainwashing of young and vulnerable minds to join the ‘holy’ Jehad – Dholakia attempts to address all these issues in this film. Given that Kashmir cannot be understood from a limited perspective and any portrayal of this contentious issue needs a holistic approach, Dholakia fails to provide a comprehensive narrative.

It’s a persuasive tale, how the issue of Kashmir has become more of a business proposition and a story of political one-upmanship for those in power. Caught in the crossfire of political rhetoric and unabated militancy are ordinary lives struggling to come out of the shadow of terror. But somewhere it falls short of becoming that one defining film on Kashmir that tells a complete untold story.

The cast doesn’t disappoint with Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu and Anupam Kher delivering their parts with conviction. Kunal Kapoor is decent except his attempted fiery and provocative speeches that fall flat and sound totally unconvincing and filmy. Some characters with their frightening beards seem like lame stereotypes that we could have done without.

The songs are just thrown in without any attempt to weave it into the narrative. The experimentation with the camera movements and editing didn’t quite seem to have the desired effect; in fact, I found it quite disconcerting initially.

To give him his due, it’s a commendable effort but the climax doesn’t quite pay off. Like I said, in his attempt to address varied issues at the same time, the plot doesn’t quite tie in everything with together at the end. I was left wanting for more and looking for some kind of closure while I watched the end credits on screen.

movie review : Khatta Meetha

I wish I could at least call “Khatta Meetha” a mindless comedy but it isn’t even that. Priyadarshan has thrown in oodles of melodrama and dollops of attempted-morals in a film that is for the most part intended to be a funny political satire. The film has a struggling hero, corrupt elder brothers, sarcastic sisters-in-law, a righteous patriarch and eve-teasing politicians, reminiscent of B-grade Hindi film sagas from the 1970s.
Akshay Kumar is a road construction worker struggling to make it big like his dishonest brothers. Initially it seems like honesty is the only impediment to Akshay’s road ahead but as the film progresses you realize that he is not that honest after all. Then why does he try to reiterate again and again to his elder brothers that they are successful only because they are unscrupulous?

The narrative is all over the place, an item number here, a song sequence there, lots of drama, an attempted suicide, an alleged murder and a brutal death of the villain, and Priyadarshan seems to think his job is done. Where is the finesse with which he made us laugh and cry in “Billu” or the psychological thrill and the seemingly unintended comedy that was there in “Bhool Bhulaiyaa”?
You will manage a few laughs because Akshay’s and Rajpal Yadav’s comic timing is instinctive. But other than that the film seems like a never-ending ordeal. Trisha is a total misfit and her lip-sync seemed off in a number of places. The rest of the cast is the usual ensemble that you see in most of Priyadarshan’s Hindi films. They do a reasonable job considering they can do little to overcome a very bad script.

The film is a remake of the Malayalam political satire, Vellanakalude Naadu (1988) which was a huge success but the problem is something that worked in 1988 has a limited chance of working today unless the director effectively repurposes the original story. It’s a huge letdown from a director who we know is capable of much more.

Latests hot in bollywood

Asin, who reportedly found herself ousted out of cine ventures toplining John Abraham and Ranbir Kapoor is facing a round of distress over her innings in cinebiz. Her father, Joseph Thottumkal felt that expert guidance would help Asin consolidate her position in Hindi cinema and has entrusted the reins of Asin's career to her new God parents: Boney Kapoor and Sridevi. Now before making any decisions, Asin seeks their advice!

Katrina Kaif has been snowed under an avalanche of praise for her riveting act in 'Raajneeti' and her lengthy Hindi dialogues have come in for express praise, considering that she dubbed for them herself. Kat says: ""But what's great is that I have a terrific memory! I can easily remember three to four pages of dialogue too." Now pretty Kat has got a sharp memory too.
After finishing all her assignments here, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is off to London for a month's break. 'Landed in London...Love the summers here, weather is beautiful. Heading towards home sweet home now. So looking forward to this one month break,' Shilpa posted on her Twitter account.
Priyanka Chopra was filming an Argentino Tango dance number for Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Saat Khoon Maaf' but PC just couldn't manage to get the steps right! Choreographer Soparkar realised that the problem was her long tight red gown. The cool solution was: slit the sides right upto the thighs, so that PC would be able to manage the intricate steps correctly.
Wearing a spectacular full-length gown made of lettuce leaves and other vegetables, Miss Universe 2000 and film star Lara Dutta looks delicious in new ads for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). "Going vegetarian is one of the easiest ways to improve our health, help countless animals and protect the Earth," says Dutta.

Kareena Kapoor new films

Destiny thwarted her efforts twice. Bebo, however, is hoping to be lucky third time around. Madhur Bhandarkar had earlier handpicked Kareena Kapoor for 'Page 3', but the actress had to turn down the offer since she was already committed to filming Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Omkara'.
KK lost out on 'Fashion' too since there was a date problem… and the beneficiary turned out to be Priyanka Chopra.
MB and KK have now joined forces for 'Heroine,' which Bebo holds expressly close to her heart. Although Bebo has SRK's 'Ra.One'; Saif Ali Khan's 'Agent Vinod'; Rohit Shetty's 'Golmaal 3' and is likely to team up with Imran Khan for Karan Johar's next venture, the actress is sure that she will not shoot for any other flick during the filming of MB's heroine centric opus, coz' "it's a performance oriented role and I'd like to give my heart and soul to this one film."
Reportedly, the saga is partly inspired by the turbulent life and times of Hollywood legend Marilyn Monroe!
Reveals KK in a tabloid quote, "We'll be adapting some of Marlyn's famous roles. There will also be a couple of moments from her controversial personal life. It will be emotionally draining, though I am prepared for it."
Apparently, MB will serve up a whole lot of material on Marilyn Monroe to KK by way of research, and her homework will include watching films of classic divas such as Madhubala, Nargis and Waheeda Rehaman too.
Asserts Bebo, "The role in 'Heroine' is tailor made for me, because I've been a heroine ever since I was in my mother's womb. I eat, drink and breathe acting."

Hrithik, Farhan Go Shirtless

Three drool worthy males in Spain. Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. All in the process of frantic filming for Zoya Akhtar's 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'.
A short scene demanded the trio of males to go shirtless. Farhan and Hrtihik, who boast of washboard abs and hunky frames swiftly stripped off their shirts to flaunt their bods. Not Deol, though.
Aaahh, pity, bro Sunny's strongpoint (rippling muscles, super physique) is not Abhay's highlight.
Sensing the comparison with the two hunks, a canny Abhay chose to keep a vest on for the scene.
Says a close source, "Abhay was very apprehensive about taking his shirt off because he felt that he didn't have a body which he could show off. Abhay also jokingly told Hrithik and Farhan that 'You guys have it and I have yet to make it'. Finally, he did the scene with his vest on."
Heyyyyyyyyyyy, no big Deol, Abhay….

Imran Set For Jan 2011 Wedding

Even as scores of females (and many males, ahem) go nuts over the 'new' softer Imran Khan of 'I Hate Luv Storys', here's some naughty, sorry, knotty news.
Reportedly, Imry Boy is all set to enter into holy matrimony with his steady gf and fiancée Avantika Malik, in January 2011, whom he's been dating since the last eight years!
An insider spills the beans stating, "The wedding won't be a 'nikaah'. It'll be a simple registered marriage in Mumbai and only a few close friends and family members will be invited. Both Imran and Avantika don't believe in large, grand preparations, but the wedding arrangements have already started."
Incidentally, Imry Boy got engaged to Avantika in January 2010… and perhaps, perceives January as a lucky month for him.
States Imry in a tabloid quote, "I haven't locked the exact wedding date since my shooting dates are uncertain. I want to take a break from my shooting schedules so that I can plan the entire event in a proper manner."

Meet the bride and groom

The 21-year-old, who married the country’s most eligible bachelor, is an incurable romantic with little interest in cricket

On the field, he is known for his grip on the game. On Sunday morning, as the nation woke up to the news of the Mahendra Singh Dhoni's engagement and wedding, the world's most exciting cricketer stumped us with his grip on matters off the field too.

In a fast and furious spell, MSD got engaged to Kolkata girl Sakshi Rawat in a well-guarded resort in the foothills of the Himalayas. Within hours he married her in a ceremony which was out of bounds for the media, at a luxurious resort in Dehradun.

Contrary to what was earlier reported in the media, 21-year-old Sakshi Singh Rawat is not the Indian captain's childhood sweetheart, even though their families had known each other for a long time. A source close to the cricket star revealed, "Sakshi was a trainee with Taj Bengal, Kolkata, in 2008, when the two met." Prodded by their families who, according to a friend went to the extent of matching their kundlis, Dhoni and Sakshi, kept in touch. "However, nothing much happened other than a few friendly SMSes and conversations on the phone," says the source, adding, "After he went to Australia, he began texting her again. Something just clicked at that time."

Like most 21-year-olds, Sakshi is an incurable romantic, say her close friends. She has watched Robert Pattinson's Twilight at least 10 times, and lists Hollywood rom coms and daily soaps among her favourites. Incidentally, her cocker spaniel is named Joey.

Sakshi, whose family lives in Alipore, one of Kolkata’s most upscale neighbourhoods, finished her internship with the Taj a year ago, and has been working for an NGO since then.

Interestingly, as sources also revealed, Sakshi is no cricket fanatic, and has shown no interest in attending any of Dhoni’s matches so far. Since he could not get her to the matches, Dhoni even flew down to be with her in Aurangabad — where she was studying hotel management — during the 2009 IPL grind.

There was a twist in this sweet tale, when Dhoni allegedly developed cold feet. A friend of Dhoni- who incidentally was not invited to the wedding - claimed, the two sets of parents intervened to help the star cricketer make up his mind about marriage. “Dhoni did not want to marry before the World Cup, but his parents’ failing health seemed to have played a catalyst,” adds the friend.

“Finally, at the beginning of 2010, Dhoni decided to take the plunge,” adds another source. And while Sakshi informed her close friends and family about the big decision, no one was really sure about the date, which was finalised only 25 days ago.
You are NOT invited

The ceremony, according to sources was attended by Dhoni’s close friends and a select few from the Indian team RP Singh, Piyush Chawla, Praveen Kumar, and Suresh Raina. One big name missing was that of Dhoni’s one time close friend Yuvraj Singh. Singh, however wished Dhoni on twitter.

Though Bollywood was conspicuous in its absence, other than John Abraham, the Bhojpuri film fraternity was represented at the wedding. In 2008, Dhoni had shot for a music video with Rani Tiwari, Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari's wife, who was present at Vishranti resort, Dehrudun for the nuptials.

Mr And Mrs Dhoni

I am not a cricket aficionado. But, from Saturday night to Monday morning, there is nothing about Mahendra Singh Dhoni that I don’t know. That’s not bad since he does don the India colours. But now I also know all about an unknown Sakshi Rawat. So MSD didn’t marry the girl he was expected to marry, but that didn’t make it any less intriguing, or fun.

The wedding was a well-kept secret, since Bipasha Basu has been telling us on Twitter that it was not sudden, but pre-planned. Weddings never are, are they? Incidentally that puts paid to my journo friend’s comment which says hurry means lots to worry.

But, perhaps my friend is not totally off cue here. Some reports suggest that Dhoni had developed cold feet and didn’t want to marry before the World Cup. But both sets of parents ‘intervened’ to set things on course.
Once on course, there was no stopping the flow of information. We know about Ashish, the man whose ghoodi (the ghoodi has two names Rani and Bobby) MSD rode to the wedding. Ashish was ‘ecstatic’ about his hi-profile client who gave him Rs 5001 at the end of the ride. When MSD rides your mare, time under the sun is guaranteed.

We also know MSD’s sehra was made by Charandas of Dehradun’s  Paltan Bazaar for Rs 10,000.
And, did you see the hapless local who was delivering supplies to the venue and had cameras and microphones thrust at him?

But we are still missing the important detail: What are the honeymoon plans? What? No news?

Neil Priyanka's first husband

Presently, he is busy with his next venture, Saat Khoon Maaf,  playing the husband of the talented beauty Priyanka Chopra.
Currently, Neil is shooting at Coorg. “We have just started shooting in Coorg, and it's raining heavily here. But I love it. This is a unique film with challenging roles for every character in the film, especially for Priyanka ,” says Neil.
Neil is one of the seven husbands of Priyanka Chopra. “ I play the first husband of Priyanka in the film. She has shot many scenes with her other husbands, like Naseeruddin Shah, John Abraham and Anu Kapoor,” says Neil, who seems quite excited about the role.
“It’s really a tough role. Fortunately, Piggy Chops and all her husbands, including me and John, have gone through a brief workshop before shooting started. It was a good experience for me,” adds Neil.
Praising the director, he says, “Who will not work with Vishal Bharadwaj? He is such a great director, and Saat Khoon Maaf is going to be a different film. And I am looking forward to this film.” After working with Bharadwaj, he will then start shooting for Abbas Mustan’s remake of The Italian Job in September.

Avantika – Imran’s Girlfriend

Just the day before we had updated you about a crazy female admirer biting Imran Khan’s hand during a promotional event for IHLS last Saturday in Dubai.
When we asked Imran about the same, he instantly replied,
‘It was at a night club in Dubai. The whole thing was taken out of context. I was shaking hands with a lot of people outside. She held my hand and was trying to pull me. I don’t think she was trying to hurt me.’ Sonam cheekily added, ‘She just took the chocolate boy tag too seriously.’
On being asked what his girlfriend, Avantika Malik had to say about the biting episode, Imran quite candidly said, ‘She was very happy. According to her, the more female fans that I have, the more successful I will be.’
Imran’s first film, JAANE TU YA JAANE NA released on 4th July, 2008, and now IHLS is releasing on 2nd July. Does the month July have anything to do behind the stars success???
Well with the release of I HATE LUV STORYS, we will soon come to know if the July factor proves second time lucky for Imran.

High Demand for Abhi and ash

Raavan has shocked the box office pundits. Yes! We are aware of that. But, Abhi and Aish is still the ‘IT’ couple and are very much in demand among the filmmakers. Undoubtedly, this lovely Jodi rocks the film world.

The latest buzz doing the rounds in the industry is that, the famous writer, Chetan Bhagat, is hell bent on starring Abhi and Aish in the film which is based on his third book ‘3 Mistakes Of My Life’. He is trying his very best to persuade the power couple to act in the movie. If this buzz is to be believed, then, the movie will be directed by the dashing Abhishek Kapoor who impressed in Rock On.

‘3 Mistakes Of My Life’ is about three friends Govind (hero), Omi and Ishaan who are struggling to live a life according to their dreams and start a small business with a Cricket shop. Govind, for some extra income, teaches Maths to Ishaan’s sister Vidya (heroine), and falls in love with her. Then the things start to crumble among the three friends.

Salmaan Skip Ash's Ravaan

While the entire cast and crew of ‘Ready’ went to watch Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan’s latest film Raavan, in Sri Lanka, Salman Khan preferred giving it a miss.
Sallu miya did not want to anger Tamil community that is already furious over him shooting in Sri Lanka. But the actual reason behind not turning up for the movie was, he couldn’t stand his ex flame Aishwarya Rai with Abhishek.
Says a source, “Initially Salman did show interest in the film. But then when it was time to accompany the rest of the ‘Ready’ unit Salman opted out because of the controversial nature of the subject and also the fact that he has earned the wrath of the Tamilians by embracing endorsing and visiting Sri Lanka twice in a month.”
Salman Khan was not seen in upbeat mood.
Director Mahesh Manjrekar confirms Salman’s absence, “We had a good time. Wish Salman accompanied us.”
However, its not suprising if the reason is Aish. After all, Salman doesn’t watch the films of Katrina Kaif as well. He had said in an interview that he does not like to see Kat wearing skimpy clothes or romancing other heroes on screen.
May be that holds true for Ash as well.

Salmaan Khan Ek dum fit body

As promised, perfectionist Aamir Khan joined the super popular social networking site; Twitter today. The moment he posted his first mail as test mail in the social networking site, he has attracted more than 40,000 followers in a duration of 12 hours.
The most interesting part is, his number of followers is more than Amitabh Bachchan who actually inspired Aamir Khan to join Twitter. On the first day, Big B earned 37,500 followers while Aamir 50,000.
Aamir Khan first thanked Mr. Bachchan.
He says, “ Bhala gardish falak ki chain deti hai kise Insha, ganimat hai ke hum suratyahan do-chaar baithey hain. Esp for you sir. Love.”
Amitabh replied:
“Thank you Aamir… You give more due than I deserve … Happy Tweeting ….”
Aamir’s last tweet read:
“Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Love. Aamir.”
Phew!! Finally one more celenrity added to the Twitter list. Happy tweeting Aamir .

Kareena Kapoor launch her official website

Twitter doesn’t satisfy Kareena Kapoor. While all the Bollywood actors are busy joining the famous social networking site Twitter, our lovely lady Kareena, probably aspires something bigger and exclusive.
This lady has launched her official website (www.kareenakapoor.me) where she hopes to share tidbits of her daily life with her fans.
“This is my own site, my own space. I like the idea of leaving Post-it notes for my fans. I have created a special fan book where fans can write to me directly,” Kareena said in a statement.
On her website, Kareena also declared that she’s delighted and privileged to be part of the global 1 GOAL campaign which aims to support education for all.
“1 GOAL campaign will reach a number of people who are not familiar with Indian cinema. This site will be a window to India and Indian cinema,” said the 29-year-old actress.
