Tabu lived in Hyderabad, far from Mumbai's madding crowd. Her only link with Mumbai's film world was her aunt, Shabana Azmi.Yes, Shabana Azmi is her Aunt.

First, Tabu's elder sister, Farha stormed films, but could not sustain her stardom. Farha managed her career rather badly and finally settled down to marital bliss with Dara Singh's son. Tabu entered the field after Farha left films.

Tabu's career opened with a grand production. She was taken by Boney Kapoor in his film to be directed by Shekhar Kapur and was cast opposite Sanjay Kapoor.
